Fishing report: July 5

Salmonid angling is currently open for Chinook jacks, steelhead, and sockeye from the Astoria-Megler Bridge upstream to Bonneville Dam. Adult summer Chinook retention closed early on July 1.

Chinook, steelhead, and sockeye retention is open from Bonneville Dam upstream to the Washington/Oregon border.

Angling for shad is open from Buoy 10 upstream to the Washington/Oregon border.

The McNary Pool is open to the retention of legal white sturgeon through July 31. Anglers are reminded that spawning sanctuaries are in effect (see special regulations details).

Walleye angling is good in The Dalles and John Day pools. (ODFW)

Trout angling continues to be good in many southwest Washington lakes, although the warmer weather is slowing the bite at some lowlands lakes.

Salmon/Steelhead/Shad

Last week 636 bank anglers in the lower Columbia kept 37 adult Chinook and released 17. They kept one Chinook jack and released one. They kept 23 steelhead and released nine. 434 boat anglers kept 22 adult Chinook and released five, and they kept 50 steelhead and released eight. They also released seven sockeye.

Bonneville Dam: 112 bank anglers at Bonneville Dam kept 10 adult and three jack Chinook and released three adults. Four boat anglers had no catch.

Interstate 5: 44 bank anglers kept one steelhead and released three.

Vancouver: 122 bank anglers kept nine adult Chinook, released seven, and kept one steelhead and released two.

Woodland: 36 bank anglers kept six 6 adult Chinook and released three. Eleven boat anglers had no catch.

Kalama: 90 bank anglers kept eight adult Chinook, one jack, one steelhead, and released two adult Chinook, one jack, and two steelhead. 102 boat anglers kept six adult chinook and released one Chinook and one steelhead.

Cowlitz: no report.

Longview: 180 bank rods kept one adult Chinook and 17 steelhead, while releasing one Chinook adult and three steelhead. 121 boat rods kept seven adult chinook and 28 steelhead. They released two Chinook and two steelhead.

Cathlamet: 50 bank anglers kept three adult chinook and two steelhead. 59 boat anglers kept one adult Chinook and 13 steelhead. (WDFW)

Shad: 213 bank anglers kept 1000 shad and released 81. Five boat anglers kept 39.

Recent trout stockings

No report on angling success.

Battle Ground Lake: June 14, 1,000 rainbow at 1.2 per pound.

Goose Lake: June 15, 10 rainbow at 0.1 per pound, 1,500 rainbow at 2.1 per pound, 20 at 0.2 per pound.

Mayfield Reservoir: From June 7-20, 14, 450 rainbow were stocked at about two per pound.

Warm water opportunities

Lacamas Lake/Vancouver Lake: Anglers continue to catch good-sized largemouth bass in both of these lakes. Fishing will probably remain good until summer heat sets in. At Vancouver Lake the best bite has been in the Lake River area.

Mayfield Lake: Tiger muskies are biting well.

John Day Dam: Catfish are being caught both above and below the dam. (WDFW)
