The suspect vehicle in a hit-and-run of a pedestrian later slammed into a Vancouver police patrol car and fled, prompting a brief high-speed chase Friday night on northbound Interstate 5, according to radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

No officers were injured.

The pedestrian struck earlier in the evening was transported to an area hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to a press release from the Vancouver Police Department.

At about 6:15 p.m., witnesses said a dark-colored, two-door car — possibly a late-80s or early-90s Thunderbird — struck an adult pedestrian crossing the street at West 13th and Daniels streets, then kept going. Police blocked off 13th Street between Esther to Daniels streets while they investigated the crash.

The suspect vehicle was seen traveling in the area after the crash.

Then, shortly before 7:30 p.m., police spotted the suspect vehicle in the 3200 block of East Fourth Plain Boulevard, according to scanner traffic. The officer approached the vehicle and attempted to contact the driver, but the vehicle backed into the patrol car, causing minor damage, the press release states.

A high-speed chase ensued, according to scanner traffic, but was terminated near the 78th Street exit.

The investigation is ongoing and further updates were not expected until Saturday evening.
