A one-vehicle crash near Washougal early Thursday morning caused a power outage in the area.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies and fire personnel went to the scene of the crash at the 3200 block of Southeast 362nd Avenue, outside of the Washougal city limits, at about 12:10 a.m.

A red 2005 Mazda 3 driven by Marty A. Swofford was northbound when Swofford lost control and crashed the car into an electrical pole. The vehicle ended up on its roof, deputies said.

Power lines fell across the road and power went out in the area.

Fifty-eight customers lost power due to the crash, said Clark County Utilities spokeswoman Erica Erland. Several customers had power immediately restored but went dark again as utility workers carried out full repairs.

The final two customers got their power back around 5 a.m., Erland said.

Swofford was trapped in the vehicle for 20 minutes before he was freed by rescuers.

Swofford was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for medical treatment, and the hospital said later Thursday morning he’d been released.

Excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash but deputies are continuing their investigation.
