Prairie girls score final 12 points to beat Rogers-Puyallup 50-48

The Prairie girls basketball team picked up its ninth win in a row on Saturday.

It wasn’t a league game, but coach Hala Corral called it a huge win for the Falcons as they march toward the postseason.

Brooke Walling scored with one second left to cap a 12-0 run to finish the game and lift Prairie to 50-48 road win over Rogers-Puyallup.

The Falcons (14-2) were down 10 with under four minutes to play when Corral called timeout.

“We just told the kids ‘One stop, one score. One stop, one score,’ ” Corral said. “And that’s what they did. We got a three from Allison (Corral), a two from Mallory (Williams). And then with 12 seconds left, we had the ball for one last shot. We called a play for Ally to get the ball to Brooke. She got it to her, and Brooke hit the shot.”

With starter Cassidy Gardner already out sick, the Falcons faced even more hurdles when a number of players got into foul trouble.

“This is such a big win for us,” Hala Corral said. “We already had one starter out, then we had a couple of more in foul trouble. We really needed other people to step up, and we did. Mallory Williams was huge tonight.”

Williams had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Walling had 18 points, and Allison Corral also scored 11.

“They kept fighting,” Hala Corral said. “This game showed that they can battle back against a good team after being down almost the whole game and still win it. That’s the biggest lesson from tonight.”

Prairie (15-2) also had to overcome a 31-point game from Rogers’ Raigan Barrett.

“She was just in a zone, hitting step-back 3-pointers,” Hala Corral said. “I think she led them in everything — points, rebounds, assists, steals. She had the game of her life. But in the end, we were able to stop her.”
