Camas High School graduate Niko De Vera was selected in the second round (31st pick overall) by the New York Red Bulls in the MLS SuperDraft on Friday.

De Vera was a three-year starter at the University of Akron, including all 23 games this past season when the Zips advanced to the NCAA semifinals.

“It was crazy sitting there all anxious waiting for my name to be called,” said De Vera in a release from the university. “Then when I heard my name called my mind went blank as I was walking up to the podium. Before I knew it, I’m in the back doing interviews. I’m blessed to get this opportunity and very grateful be here and thankful for my last four years being an Akron Zip.”

De Vera played two seasons for Camas High School, including his freshman year in 2011 when the Papermakers won the state championship. He was also a Timbers Academy member and played on the Timbers’ U-23 team during his time at Akron.

De Vera helped spark a Zips’ defensive unit that has posted 41 shutouts over his four-year career, including 12 this fall.

“Niko is a very exciting player and we are extremely proud of him,” Akron head coach Jared Embick said. “He has really worked hard to get to this point and the Red Bulls are getting a terrific player.”
