Clark County begins construction on its newest Vancouver park later this month.

A 7.9-acre parcel in the Heritage neighborhood will be named Otto Brown Neighborhood Park. The property is along the south side of Northeast 96th Street, west of Northeast 162nd Avenue.

When complete, it will be the 31st park in the Greater Clark Parks District.

The park will feature a perimeter asphalt path, nature play area and play equipment, sports court, wood-chip paths and picnic tables. The park should be complete in the fall. Catworks Construction of Battle Ground was selected as contractor in December. The project will cost $922,100.

The park’s namesake, Otto Brown, was born in 1878 in the Hockinson area. He is known for building a bicycle out of wood and riding it to Vancouver’s Fourth of July celebration. A local bicycle shop owner was so impressed he gave Brown a new bike and displayed the wooden creation in the shop window.

Neighbors asked the county to name the park after Brown in 2010. To further honor Brown, the park will feature a bicycle theme.
