YACOLT — The North Country EMS Volcano Rescue Team, the group of volunteers that helps hikers and climbers in distress on Mount St. Helens, is looking for new recruits.
The team provides quick search and rescue teams along with technical mountain rescue functions.
They train to work in all aspects of mountain, cave, crevasse, high-angle and avalanche rescue operations, as well as at least basic first aid.
Last summer was extremely busy, said team coordinator Tom McDowell. While there may be 30 volunteers on the roster, should a call come, maybe four to seven might make it out, he said.
Such as when they pulled a woman from a cave to a helicopter, which happened last year.
“So the more the merrier, because it’s kind of difficult,” he said.
Volunteers are expected to provide a portion of their own gear — those who stick with it tend to get their own stuff anyway, he said — but the technical equipment is provided through the organization.
Generally, McDowell said, applicants need to be in hiking shape. Prior mountaineering experience isn’t required, though it helps, and preference is given to applicants with outdoor experience and training.
Volunteers attend monthly meetings, along with field and classroom training.
Applications, as well as more information about the Volcano Rescue Team, are available on its website, volcanorescueteam.org.
