Pedestrian safety patrols scheduled for Thursday

Additional police officers will be on patrol Thursday in an effort to reduce pedestrian traffic injuries and fatalities.

Officers from the Battle Ground, La Center, Vancouver and Washougal police departments, along with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, will be looking around the county for violating drivers and for opportunities to talk to pedestrians, according to the Clark County Traffic Safety Task Force.

The patrols were scheduled with a goal to heighten public awareness of pedestrian safety, distracted driving and walking, and speeding.

The money for the extra shifts comes from a state grant. Local Target Zero program manager Hillary Torres said the grant is in its second year, and was awarded to the county following a particularly bad year for pedestrian fatalities and injuries locally.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, there were 25 fatal or injury crashes involving a pedestrian in 2015. That number slipped to 22 in 2016, and was down to 14 last year.

“We’ve met with some really great success,” Torres said.
