The Pocket Guide for homeless people has been updated for winter and is available in PDF online at www.councilforthehomeless.org/pocket-guide. The pocket-sized guide, which is printed on waterproof, tear-proof paper, lists local laws, survival tips and resources for people living outside.
The first edition of The Pocket Guide was printed over the summer, but updates are made seasonally to keep the information relevant. New content includes the Suicide Prevention Lifeline number and info about the The Salvation Army in Washougal. Between August and October 2,000 copies were given to people at sites such as Share’s day center, the Clark County Jail, churches and libraries.
Lois Smith, who spearheaded the creation of The Pocket Guide, said in a news release that she’s gotten calls and emails from people around the country.
“The interest sparked by this resource is a reminder that homelessness is a national issue,” Smith said. “I am thankful our community continues to find ways to help in urgent situations like living outside, while also working for longer-term solutions to homelessness.”
