Carter Monda hit a go-ahead 3-pointer, Dwight Jones made two late free throws and Christian Huerta deflected a last-second 3-pointer attempt as the Evergreen boys basketball teams survived a wild 76-73 win over Fort Vancouver on Friday.
“It was a great game,” Evergreen coach Brett Henry said. “Crazy, but great.”
The start wasn’t so great for the Plainsmen.
“We were flat,” Henry said. “We didn’t have any energy. It tooks us four minutes to get into it. It was like 11-1. We were just stuck on one and couldn’t get it going.”
That changed in the second quarter when Henry brought in help from the bench. Jerontae Burns hit a 3 to get the Plainsmen going and X’Zayvier Washington scored seven of his nine points in the quarter and took two charges on defense as the Plainsmen outscored Fort 29-7 to take a 42-32 halftime lead.
“We’ve been waiting all season for a quarter like that,” Henry said. “Finally, our shots all dropped. We hit seven of our 13 3-pointers in the second quarter.”
