This summer’s fires in the Columbia River Gorge are the story of the year, according to two different groups of Columbian readers. But after that, there’s not much crossover at all.
As members of The Columbian’s news team compiled our Top 10 list of stories for 2017, we also invited readers to make their own picks from an online version of our 20-item ballot.
Finally, we tallied up the 2017 stories that drew the most page views at columbian.com.
The wildland burning in the Gorge — the Eagle Creek fire on the Oregon side and Skamania County’s Archer Mountain blaze — was the No. 1 story on all three Top 10 lists, and by wide margins. (Another aspect of the Eagle Creek fire was No. 8 on the online page-view list, after a Vancouver teen was suspected of starting the blaze.)
