There are big improvements to driving conditions on main roads in the Portland-Vancouver area due to a lack of precipitation overnight Friday, but the colder temperatures will stick around for today, and snow may return this afternoon.

The National Weather Service said patchy fog is expected before 10 a.m. and there’s a 50 percent chance of snow in the afternoon in the Vancouver area.

Cloud coverage will increase and the temperature may reach 38 degrees as Friday continues, according to the weather service.

Vancouver was one of four areas that tied record lows for Feb. 23. A temperature of 22 degrees was recorded as for 4:30 a.m. Friday. The previous record was set in 1993, according to the weather service.

The weather service issued a winter weather advisory this morning saying that light snow will develop after 4 p.m. , continuing until 4 a.m. Saturday.

“A dusting is possible this afternoon, but the main accumulating snow will arrive after 6 p.m., with 1 to 2  inches expected,” the advisory said. It warned of slippery road conditions this evening.

Some county schools will open later than usual following two days of widespread closures.

Battle Ground School District’s north schools are on a two-hour delay, and its morning and evening buses are taking snow routes. Washougal School District is also starting its day two hours late, with morning buses on snow routes. The full list of delays is here.

Rain and snow showers are forecast Saturday morning, turning to all rain after 10 a.m. with a high near 44, but a chance of rain and snow showers returns Sunday afternoon through Monday. Little to no snow accumulation is expected.
