The Union girls basketball team clinched its first berth to the state round 16 and set a school record for wins in a season with a 44-35 win over Olympia in the seventh-place game at the 4A bi-district tournament on Saturday.
It was a tight game throughout — tied 20-20 at halftime and Union led 29-28 after three quarters.
But the Titans came up with a key rebounds late and Mason Oberg scored seven points in the final 1:45 to seal the win for Union.
“Rebekeah Barney had a huge offensive rebound for us late,” Union coach Mike Cranston said. “She kicked it out to Mason, who buried a 3-pointer that gave us a five-point lead.”
Courtney Cranston added nine rebounds.
“We’ve been a bit shorthanded in the post these last couple of games, and Courtney did a nice job inside for us,” Cranston said.
Oberg and Mackenzie Lewis finished with 13 points for Union, which was 12 of 16 from the line. Oberg hit eight of eight free throws.
“It’s been a tough road for us, having to make five trips up north and playing in three loser-out games,” Cranston said. “I’m really proud of the way we responded.”
