Weather Eye: Wintry weather possibly on way this weekend

Overnight lows were expected to be in the 20s early this morning. I bet some outlying areas dropped to around 20 degrees. That’s surely the coldest low temperature this calendar year. With partly sunny skies, we should warm up to about normal, which is 50 degrees, this afternoon.

I mentioned Old Man Winter was hanging behind the curtains and some forecast models hint he may pay us a visit some time over the upcoming weekend. So, expect cooler conditions and perhaps maybe some white on the ground. Frost or snow? Always too early to predict this far out but at least the potential is there for winterlike weather. We keep the Weather Eye out for you here, so stay tuned.

Talking to my brother Sunday, I mentioned how chilly it felt outside, and of course he had to rub it in how warm it was there. He lives in Phoenix, where the warm sunshine is shining right now. I guess there are many snowbirds from Clark County there at the moment.

Monday was such a clear sunny day that one could see for miles and miles. Did you see the Cascades and the highest peaks like Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood? Both mountains had lots of white snow on the slopes but also plenty of rocky surfaces showing. If we do get some cold and moisture, hopefully they get a much-needed facelift!

For the first 11 days of the month here in Vancouver, we are running 3.6 degrees above normal for the average mean temperature, which was 46.6 degrees. We are running close to 2 inches of rain below average with only 0.014 inch in the rain bucket this month. It is so dry, I saw blowing dust Monday alongside the roadway. Not quite like a typical February, where mud puddles usually abound.

Last year, Vancouver had 5.63 inches of rain as of Feb. 12, and the average mean temperature was running 3.83 degrees below average. What a contrast one year can make. Looking ahead we have a chance for showers Wednesday and perhaps by the weekend as we watch for the placement of possible colder air.
