Weather Eye: Our weather appears prepared to spring upon us

Well, that sunshine Monday was inviting, and afternoon temperatures were near the 60-degree mark like they were on Sunday. Like I say, if the weather is not going to act like winter, then let’s fast forward to spring. It appears we are heading quickly in that direction. No cold or snow on the horizon.

Do you remember when we last had an overnight low at freezing or below? I didn’t, I had to look it up. It was over one month ago on Jan. 3. Totally unbelievable for winter weather. Also, Vancouver’s average mean temperature is running 8 degrees above normal. We have had two days this month with 60-degree highs and the rest in the mid- to upper 50s.

Looking ahead this week, not much has changed: We remain warmer than usual, no freezing or snow. Not much rain, either, if weather systems stay to our north. One computer model shows some showers Thursday, but nothing heavy. So, we keep clouds or fog in the forecast and maybe some drips, but most likely some sunny periods, as well, right through the weekend.

The upcoming weekend looks mostly sunny. What can I say but nice? Unfortunately, not much snow for the ski areas. Perhaps some flurries from time to time as weak weather systems skirt by to our north. They will surely lose more snow than they would gain under our current persistent weather pattern.

Weather watcher Jim Knoll of the Orchards area sent me an email and sums up our weather. “Whatever the groundhogs or hedgehogs or any other hogs may say, spring isn’t just around the corner. It’s here now. With temperatures topping out in the 60s and lots of previous rain, the grass is growing and the flowers are coming up. I may not be able to put off mowing the lawn for much longer. I really don’t like to start that task in February. Late March is a better time. January turned out to be my second-warmest in 37 years of records.”

Spring has sprung, it appears, unless Old Man Winter has something he is hiding for us. See you on Thursday.
