The Battle Ground boys basketball team had to dig deep Saturday to take home the title of the Slam Division of the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament in San Diego.
Lukas Karlsson hit three 3-pointers in a pivotal second quarter and Colin Barton had a season-high 21 points to lead the Tigers to a 72-63 win over Irvington of Freemont, Calif.
The Tigers won the tournament despite having post Kaden Perry sidelined by injury all weekend.
In Saturday’s game, the Tigers lost two more starters to injury as Vincent McCormic and Nathan Millsbaugh exited early.
“We had to go deep into our bench tonight,” coach Manny Melo said. “Our bench really stepped up.”
Battle Ground hit eight 3-pointers in a 30-point second quarter to take a 40-34 edge into halftime.
“Lukas Karlson was 3 for 3 on 3-pointers in the quarter that really got us going,” Melo said. “He was the X-factor for us in the first half.”
Brendan Beall, who scored 11 on Saturday, was named to the all-tournament team, and KeAndre Hunter Holliday, who also had 11, was the tournament MVP.
“We shot the ball extremely well down here,” Melo said. “We had 13 3-pointers on Thursday, 15 yesterday and 11 today.”
