For the first time this season, the Skyview girls basketball team dropped a game.

But the Storm might have picked up a lesson.

Skyview lost to Lake City of Coeur d’Alene 60-41 on Friday in the holiday tournament at Evergreen High School.

In facing the No. 2 ranked Class 5A team in Idaho, Skyview saw first-hand how aggressiveness and high-intensity defense can cause problems for opponents.

“We’re always going to be one of the smaller teams, so we’ve got to be more aggressive,” Skyview coach Brett Johnson said. “Against big girls, we’ve got to put a body on them at all times.”

Lake City’s 6-foot-3 post Brooklyn Rewers scored 13 points and caused matchup problems for a Skyview team with no player taller than 5-foot-10.

But just as troublesome was Lake City’s full-court press, which never allowed the Storm to get in a rhythm.

“We were off,” Johnson said. “We had 17 turnovers. That says a lot right there.”

Skyview (11-1) hung with Lake City early and trailed 29-26 at halftime. Kazz Parks scored all of her 10 points in the first half.

But Lake City (11-2) ended the third quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 44-34 lead. The Timberwolves pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Skyview 16-7.

Emily Norton led the Storm with 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Maddie Hendricks added 10 points.

The Evergreen tournament concludes Saturday with eight games starting at 10 a.m. Skyview faces Hudson’s Bay (9-2) in the event’s final contest at 8:30 p.m.
