Weather Eye: In the weather world, no news is good news

hope you and yours had an enjoyable Christmas and all the weather enthusiasts out there got a new weather gadget. It wasn’t a white Christmas like it was last year but a cool and dry Christmas Day brings glad tidings as well.

Wishing I had exciting news to share today, but as some have told me over the years, when it comes to weather, no news is good news. Usually because weather news means hot, stormy, windy, wet, snow and cold. So, we expect — as of now — the weather the next week or so to be the no-news type.

The only thing I can see in the crystal ball are some clouds at times, some showers at times, a little snow in the mountains at times but no wind storms or heavy rain storms. The week of New Year’s could be more dry than wet. I’m sure that pleases many of you to have a quiet weather pattern.

Remember, though, we are still way behind on our rain here locally by an inch and a half so far this month. Those showers Wednesday — and they were cold ones with temperatures in the 38- to 43-degrees range — pushed us over 4 inches for the month. December 2017 was on the dry side as well, with only 3.14 inches here in Vancouver, 3.63 inches below average. Since Jan. 1, we are running over 12 inches below normal.

With only lighter amounts of rain heading our way through the next four days, we will end up below average on the monthly precipitation and way below on the yearly rainfall. And yes, December is warmer than average so far, with milder nighttime temperatures and some daytime highs in the 50s. The average mean temperature is over 2 degrees above average.

Take good care and we will have our last weather chat of 2018 on Sunday.
