Weather Eye: ‘Beast’ storm arrives, bringing likely nasty morning commute

As I was writing this column Monday afternoon, the “beast” storm had spread rain from the coast to our area. Rainfall through today was expected to be about 2 inches, with more in the foothills. Winds were expected to be similar to Friday’s with gusts in the county to 50 mph, maybe higher in exposed locations.

Despite a couple of good storms this month, as of 4 p.m. Monday Vancouver was still running 2 inches below average on rainfall. Maybe we make that up by midnight? Heavier rain was expected along the coast with 3-6 inches. Winds there were forecast to be 35-45 mph with gusts to 70 mph at the beach communities and up to 80 mph or higher on the beach and headlands. Nice dicey December storm.

Rain was falling in the mountains Monday night and today, so some snow is melting quickly. The only good news out of this weather pattern is that late this week, cooler air arrives and snow levels will lower below the passes. Beginning Friday, we go with more seasonal temperatures, highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s lasting all of Christmas week.

With heavy rain expected in Southwest Washington, there was a flood watch out for some streams. The good news is, many rivers are lower than average due to the dry fall weather. However, I expect Salmon Creek to be the color of gravy later today and Wednesday and running fast. Some coastal streams may reach flood stage like the Grays River. Locally, expect ponding on roadways and local street flooding. The morning commute was expected to be nasty with heavy rain and blustery conditions.
