Walk & Knock, Clark County’s annual single-day food drive that took place Dec. 1, collected 282,460 pounds of food and $10,000 in cash donations for the Clark County Food Bank.

“We’re very pleased that once again people in our county have stepped up to help those less fortunate,” Walk & Knock President Justin Wood said in a news release. “After 34 years, we remain the best one-day community food drive in the nation. That’s quite a statement about who we are.”

Last year, 286,000 pounds of food were collected, breaking a six-year streak of declining donations.

More than 3,200 volunteers picked up bags of nonperishable food donations from people’s doorsteps, and donations were collected from barrels placed at businesses around the county.

Wood said that besides recruiting volunteers to help during the annual drive, which always takes place on the first Saturday in December, Walk & Knock also needs leaders to serve on its volunteer board of directors.

“Many of us have been working on Walk & Knock for years, and we really need new folks with new ideas and fresh energy to step up and help us continue this unique Clark County enterprise,” Wood said.

Walk & Knock was first organized in 1985 by local service clubs.
