This is the third year that Friends of the Vancouver Community Library has put out a call to local artists to transform blank 8-inch panels into beautiful artworks — and then sell them as quickly as possible.

Go by the library during the monthly First Friday Art Walk event and you’re guaranteed a stunning display of artistic diversity in tidy bite-sized squares. Local artists accepted the open-ended challenge of transforming 300 small, empty canvases into artworks of every style and description — from serious portraiture (of people and animals) to color-gel surrealism, from quiet appreciations of nature to zany cut-out collages. You’ll find creativity and craftsmanship at every level, from student artists to accomplished professionals and everyone in between — from the Southwest Washington Watercolor Society to the Larch Correctional Facility Art Club.

All donated the results to this fundraiser, which supports the Friends’ efforts to keep artistic exhibits and projects happening at the library. They’re all available for $30 apiece, but don’t dawdle. When this sale was held during the First Friday Art Walks of December 2016 and 2017, most everything sailed out the door pretty quickly.

This weekend’s Art4Art sale begins at 5 p.m. sharp Friday in the Columbia Room at the library, 901 C St. in downtown Vancouver.

The sale continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The panels were cut from plywood boards by Friends of the Carpenter.
