Riley Hawken has found his home on the basketball court.
After starting his career at Concordia, the redshirt sophomore from Union High transferred to Western Oregon. After sitting out the 2016-17 season, the 6-foot-6 forward started 30 of 33 games last season.
Last Thursday, Hawken tied his career high with 21 points in a 72-58 win over Simon Fraser. Hawken finished 4-of-5 from three, tying his high in made 3-pointers.
“I thought Riley really stepped up in a big way,” said Western Oregon head coach Jim Shaw.
Hawken followed that performance with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) in a 96-88 double overtime win over Western Washington on Saturday.
Hawken isn’t the only Union grad to have found a home at Western Oregon. Cam Cranston, who led the Titans to second place in the 2017 state tournament, joined Western Oregon after playing one season at a prep school in Kansas.
Cranston scored five points in 15 minutes of playing time Saturday.
Western Oregon is 5-1 and 2-0 in the NCAA Division-II Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Men’s Basketball
Robert Franks, a senior from Evergreen, had 17 points and 13 rebounds in Washington State’s 69-63 loss to New Mexico State on Saturday. Franks is averaging a team-high 24.8 points per game.
Jordan Chatman, a senior from Union, scored a season-high 28 points in Boston College’s 100-95 loss to Providence on Tuesday. He played 44 minutes in the overtime loss, going 8 for 12 from the field and 9 for 9 from the foul line.
Trevor Jasinsky, a junior from Camas, scored 27 points in Western Washington’s 96-88 loss to Western Oregon on Saturday. That comes after he scored 24 in an 83-66 win over Concordia last Thursday. He is averaging 21.0 points per game this season.
Women’s Basketball
Courtney Clemmer, a freshman from Camas, tied her career high with 21 points in Oregon Tech’s 67-57 win over Simpson University on Tuesday. The 6-foot-2 post was 8 for 12 from the field and is shooting 67 percent this season.
Jossilyn Blackman, a senior from Battle Ground, scored 21 points in Lewis-Clark State’s 82-58 win over Montana Tech last Thursday. The 6-foot post is averaging 15.5 points per game for the Warriors, who are 9-2 this season.
Volleyball
Madison Pfaff, a freshman from Camas, had nine digs in Corban University’s Round of 16 match in the NAIA playoffs Friday. The Warriors lost in three sets to Lindsey Wilson College, finishing the season 23-13.
Brooke Van Sickle, a redshirt sophomore from Battle Ground, had eight digs and played all five sets in Oregon’s NCAA tournament win over Baylor on Friday. The Ducks face No. 2 Minnesota in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday.
