The Clark County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy in a fatal officer-involved shooting last week as Tom Maxfield, a 20-year veteran in law enforcement.

Maxfield shot and killed 33-year-old David Villagran, who was suspected of stealing a vehicle Wednesday morning in the Orchards area. Villagran was identified by the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday.

The medical examiner said Villagran was shot in the head and ruled his cause of death as homicide.

Deputies were called about 4:40 a.m. to the 10900 block of Northeast 72nd Street for a report of a stolen car. They found Villagran in the vehicle near Northeast 109th Avenue and 71st Street, the sheriff’s office said, and the driver rammed Maxfield in a patrol vehicle, prompting him to fire his weapon.

Maxfield suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a hospital.

He was placed on critical incident leave, as is standard practice in an officer-involved shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Clark County Regional Crimes Unit is investigating the incident.
