The fall salmon season is open from Buoy 10 at the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to the Oregon/Washington Border above McNary Dam. An estimated 375,500 fall Chinook and 213,600 coho are expected to return to the Columbia River this fall.
White sturgeon retention is closed from Buoy 10 upstream to the Oregon/Washington Border above McNary Dam, but remains an option for catch-and-release fishing. Anglers are reminded that the Bonneville Dam spawning sanctuary is still in effect through Friday.
Walleye fishing is fair in the John Day Pool.
Steelhead retention is closed in the main stem Columbia River, but is currently open in local tributaries.
Trout fishing continues to be good in high elevation lakes.
Bass and panfish are still biting in the Columbia River and local lakes.
Salmon/Steelhead
Buoy 10 — Chinook retention has closed below Tongue Point. Coho retention is still allowed, and the limit is two fin-clipped hatchery coho per day.
Tongue Point to Buoy 10 Boats — Weekend checking showed 233 coho and one steelhead kept, plus 165 Chinook, 157 coho and three steelhead released for 304 boats (1,050 anglers).
Tongue Point to Warrior Rock — Chinook retention is allowed from Tongue Point to Warrior Rock until Sunday. The daily bag limit is one salmonid. Starting Monday, Chinook retention is closed, and the limit will be two hatchery coho.
Warrior Rock to Bonneville Dam — Chinook retention is allowed through Sept. 14 with a one-fish bag limit. Starting Sept. 15 Chinook retention is closed, and anglers may keep two hatchery coho.
From Aug. 20-26, 486 bank anglers between Tongue Point and Bonneville Dam kept 13 adult and one jack Chinook. They kept nine steelhead and released one. 580 boat anglers kept 51 adult chinook and three steelhead. They released two steelhead and kept three coho.
Elochoman River — four bank anglers had no catch.
Cowlitz River — I-5 Bridge downstream: 12 bank anglers had no catch. Above the I-5 Bridge: 17 bank rods kept one chinook and released two chinook. Thirty-three boats/87 rods kept 18 chinook, three jacks, 26 steelhead and released six chinook, seven jacks and four steelhead.
Until further notice, the closed waters section below the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery Barrier Dam is 400 feet, at the posted markers.
Kalama River — One bank angler had no catch.
Lewis River — One boat/one rod had no catch.
Wind River — Two boats/two rods had no catch.
Drano Lake — 15 boats/33 rods kept seven chinook and released three steelhead.
Klickitat River — 3 bank anglers had no catch.
Sturgeon
Troutdale Boats — Closed for retention. Weekend checking showed three sublegal sturgeon released for one boat (three anglers).
John Day Pool (John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam) — Closed for retention. Weekly checking showed five sublegal, two legal and four oversize sturgeon released for six boats (17 anglers).
Walleye
Troutdale — Two walleye kept, plus 13 walleye released for four boats (nine anglers).
Portland to Westport — One walleye kept for one boat (one angler).
Bonneville Pool — Weekly checking showed three walleye kept for one boat (one angler).
The Dalles Pool — Weekly checking showed four walleye kept for six boats (12 anglers).
John Day Pool — Weekly checking showed 48 walleye kept, plus six walleye released for 42 boats (100 anglers).
