Weather Eye: Autumn drifts in on wings of northerly winds

Showers fell around Clark County over the weekend and, as expected, they were on the light side at lower elevations. However, Tom Dixon of Amboy measured .41 inches and Phil Delany above Dole Valley recorded 1.2 inches. That was a good soaking. Vancouver had .02 inches both days for a total this month of .04 inches.

It was typical of systems that slide down the B.C. Coast. They are on the dry side except when the air mass meets higher elevations and more moisture is squeezed out of the clouds. We call that orographic lift.

We still have a strong ridge of high pressure just off the coast, and we continue to have a northwest flow of air. Another weather system will skirt by on Thursday for a repeat performance of scattered, light showers or sprinkles for the lowlands. Then fair weather through the holiday weekend. Some computer models are still fussing with another chance of light rain.

We do get a slight northeast wind today and, as a result, we shoot up into the mid- to upper 80s in the area. There could be a stray 90-degree temperature somewhere on the map. Then in the 75- to 80-degree range Wednesday and Friday through Monday. Cooler on Thursday near 70 degrees.

With clear skies last night and dry air overhead, I suspect that the cooler outlying areas dipped into the mid-40s, maybe a 30-something low this morning. Couldn’t you just feel fall in the air Monday? Those crisp northerly winds.

Autumn begins Saturday for us weather folks, I can hardly wait. We’ll chat on Thursday.
