Letter: Republican Party has changed

By Michael Cortney, Vancouver
Published: August 21, 2018, 6:00am

Heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported me in the primary election. I have thought of myself as a Republican for at least 40 years, and over the past few decades, I have watched as the party has been taken over by the far right.

Like many Republicans, I feel like I never left the party, but that the party has left me and, unlike the days of Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, the idea of a progressive conservative has almost become an oxymoron. I agree with Steve Schmidt, and George Will, that the Republican Party has become the party of President Trump, and there is nothing Republican about our president or his policies, and there was nothing fiscally conservative about the big tax giveaway.

The long-term effects of this will destroy this once-great party. I also agree that the only way to save the party is to send a clear message to the GOP leadership that we want people to do their jobs and not just be a rubber stamp because they’re afraid of the next election, and that we have to vote the GOP out in the upcoming midterm elections.
