Weather Eye: In addition to higher temperatures, smoke and haze returning

As mentioned here the other day, Tuesday was the 27th day this year with a high of 90 degrees or higher. Nature cooled us down since, and weather record-keepers are in a nail-biting session whether we will break the record of 28 days.

No fear, as I believe Monday and Tuesday we have highs at 90 or better, so we’ll break the record of 27 days set in 1906. That’s more than 100 years, so I think that is worthy of mention. Not that I like the heat, but being a weatherman enjoy record-breaking events, especially non-disastrous ones.

Things are mighty dry now — just take a look around or wait for your water or electric bill. We are getting into the latter half of August, and we will now see periods of up and down fluctuations in the temperatures. A couple of hot days, then a couple of cooler days. Nights are getting much longer so the air temperature gets a good chance to cool off.

The bad news besides hot weather the next couple of days is that smoke and haze will return. Marine air should once again push inland by Thursday, bringing some morning clouds and then blue skies back. Highs will be seasonal, around 81 degrees.

I have looked at all the forecast models and don’t see any major rainstorms, which would be a welcome relief. It does appear the high temperatures will slowly be going downward.

Summer is waning at a fast pace now, longer nights, crickets chirping, grasshoppers jumping. Some vine maples are turning red and orange.

Get through the heat Monday and Tuesday and enjoy the pleasant weather after that.
