A gas leak prompted the evacuation of several homes and the closure of nearby roads in the Fourth Plain Village neighborhood Wednesday night.

Fire and utility crews were first called to the 2608 Norris Road around 7 p.m., after someone reported the odor of gas.

Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Pete Adams said it appeared a homeowner was doing some digging in the area that night, thinking the gas line he was working around had been switched off.

When he pierced the line, Adams said, he immediately realized he was mistaken and called 911.

Several homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated as a precaution, he said, and nearby roads closed.

Crews from NW Natural responded to isolate the pierced line, and Clark Public Utilities workers cut power to the area as a precaution.
