An investigation into a car crash in Wyoming turned up evidence implicating a man in a February credit union robbery in downtown Vancouver, according to court documents.

Vancouver police booked Lee Ray Williams, aka Leeray Marcus Williams, 33, of Gresham, Ore., into the Clark County Jail on Friday, after he was brought from jail in Sweetwater, Wyo. He appeared Monday on suspicion of first-degree robbery in Clark County Superior Court.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Williams was identified as the man who robbed the iQ Credit Union branch in downtown Vancouver on Feb. 9. A man entered the credit union, 1313 Main St., around noon that day and handed a teller a note demanding money. He took $180 in cash and fled in a car.

Several days later, local investigators got a call from state police in Wyoming, who said Williams was arrested following a car crash there Feb. 12. As part of the crash investigation, police searched a smartphone found in the car, and discovered text messages from Williams referring to the Vancouver robbery and the exact amount of money taken, according to court records.

Vancouver investigators contacted the woman whom Williams was texting, and she confirmed they were speaking about the robbery, the affidavit states.

Williams’ general appearance matched what was described by witnesses and seen in surveillance video during the robbery, according to court records.

His next court date was set for Aug. 24. He is being held without bail.
