New thrift shop aims to support local nonprofits

Nifty Thrifty Charity Resale Shop will hold a grand opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.

The shop, located at 6607 E. Mill Plain Blvd., will feature donated items including furniture, clothing, electronics and household goods. At the grand opening celebration, patrons can enjoy complimentary cookies and coffee as well as a free gift with any purchase.

Nifty Thrifty Charity Resale Shop exists to support local nonprofit groups, said founder Melissa Givvines.

“The idea is that different people in the community can bring items into the shop and tell us which charity they want the money to go to,” Givvines said. The funds are then parceled into accounts, and every quarter, each charity that’s raised more than $50 gets a check.

To be eligible, a cause needs to directly benefit Clark County residents in some way, and not already have its own store.

“The idea is to help the nonprofits that don’t already have this opportunity,” Givvines said.

Givvines got the idea to set up the charity status in 2016, though it never got off the ground.

“I used to be a fundraising coordinator,” she said. “I know how difficult fundraising can be, and how taxing it can be on members of nonprofit groups, but how important it is at the same time.”

Nifty Thrifty is accepting applications for volunteers. Anyone who wants to make a donation can drop off their items during business hours after Aug. 18.
