Weather Eye: Looks like respite won’t last for long

Cool and cloudy weather will be with us today and Friday, so if you didn’t like the excessive heat of recent days then you may enjoy this. I doubt our highs today and Friday get much above 75 or so — maybe closer to 70 degrees. And, morning drizzle is probable both days.

The weekend shows morning clouds thinning and highs much closer to normal at 80 to 85 degrees. Some would call that perfect. Next week’s forecast models indicated cooler weather and highs in the 75- to 85-degree range and even a chance of a shower or two. Well, as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, I threw that out the door, as they have done a 180.

It appears now (with humor, subject to change) the hot high pressure will return and we jump back into the 90s for a good share of next week. Bad news for firefighters and wildfire dangers. I like 80 degrees or under, but of course there were some that really enjoy the heat, and that’s OK.

One local weather observer sent me these comments along with his weather report for July. Jim Knoll of Orchards really enjoys the sun and hot temperatures. Here is his rendering of the recent heat wave.

“You hear talk about getting a break from the heat. Well, we get a break from the heat every day late in the evening through the morning hours. Even when the high gets to the mid-90s or higher, there are only eight to nine hours where it is 80 or above. That’s only a small part of the day. It’s nice to go out in the evening after the sun goes down and enjoy the outdoors, walking around or looking at the stars without having to grab a coat to stay warm. And most people work and drive around with air conditioning. The very few minutes experienced in the heat of the day are hardly anything to complain about. Even air-conditioned houses are getting to be the norm around here.”

Some like it hot and some like it not, as the old saying goes. I’m sure there will be many smiles today, however.
