The city of Vancouver utility says customers are receiving scam phone calls demanding personal financial information regarding supposed overdue bills.

The utility department said targeted business and residential customers took calls from someone claiming to be with the city and insisting that the customers had overdue balances in need of immediate payment.

The customers were told to call a toll-free number, which the city says is designed to mimic the department’s real recorded message. The person who answers next then tries to pressure the customer into sharing personal financial information.

The city encouraged any utility customer who gets a suspicious call to not share any information and to hang up. The city’s utility office can be reached at 360-487-7999 during business hours for questions about billing or suspicious calls.
