A suspected impaired driver was hospitalized after his car slid into another vehicle, leading to a three-car crash on Interstate 205 near Fourth Plain Boulevard on Sunday evening.

According to the Washington State Patrol, David A. Cook, 64, of Vancouver was hurt when merging onto Interstate 205 northbound from state Highway 500 around 5:30 p.m.

Cook lost control on the wet road, troopers said, and ended up perpendicular to the flow of northbound traffic on the interstate.

A pickup driver — Kenneth R. Lowe Jr., 51, of Kalama — struck the driver’s side door of Cook’s car.

Lowe’s truck and Cook’s car continued toward the left shoulder. Mary Kay Sosa, 55, of Ridgefield hit both vehicles, then all three came to a stop on the shoulder.

The crash totaled Cook’s car and Lowe’s pickup, the State Patrol said.

Cook was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for his injuries. He remained in serious condition at the hospital Monday afternoon.

No other injuries were reported, the State Patrol said.

Troopers said excessive speed caused the crash. Cook was cited on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
