Clark Asks: Immigration tops voting round

A question about local law enforcement’s role in immigration enforcement took first place in our latest Clark Asks voting round last week.

The question, “Do the Washington State Patrol, local police departments and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or are we all in sanctuary status?” captured about 44 percent of the vote.

The battle for second was neck-and-neck as a school safety question just edged out an environmental topic.

A little more than 28 percent of respondents chose, “Why do area elementary schools have more security at entrances — such as locked front doors where someone has to buzz you in — than at high school?”

Lastly, with one less vote, came this question: “Could Clark Public Utilities work more aggressively to reduce its carbon footprint?”

With the results officially tallied, a reporter will begin digging into the winning question, looking for answers, so stay tuned for a story. And if the question you voted for didn’t win, don’t despair. Sometimes we investigate the runner-ups as well.

Clark Asks is a feature we began a year ago in which you ask questions about the local community and we do our best to find answers. Sometimes the questions end up in voting rounds and other times we just jump on one and report on it. You can read those stories and learn more at columbian.com/clarkasks. You can also submit your own questions there.
