An early Monday police pursuit of a stolen pickup truck in Portland diverted briefly into Vancouver before ending in Northeast Portland.

Just before 1 a.m. in Southeast Portland, a Portland Police Bureau officer attempted to stop a driver in a black Dodge pickup for a traffic violation, according to a news release from the bureau. The driver did not stop and fled north onto Interstate 205, the news release said.

While officers on the ground did not pursue the pickup, the bureau’s Air Support Unit maintained visual contact with it as it went into Vancouver and then back into Portland, exiting I-205 at Northeast Sandy Boulevard, the news release said.

Using information from Air Support, officers put out spike strips on Northeast 105th Avenue, south of Sandy Boulevard, which deflated the vehicle’s tires. The driver continued driving through the neighborhood until crashing the pickup in a parking lot at Northeast 111th Avenue and Knott Street; the driver got out and ran away from police, the news release said.

With help from the canine and Air Support units, officers located the driver, Ryan G. Botello, 36. Police determined that the pickup had plates from a different vehicle and that it was stolen, the bureau said.

Botello was booked into Multnomah County Jail on suspicion of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, reckless driving, attempt to elude by vehicle and by foot and a U.S. Marshals’ hold, which is a federal warrant.
