Veterans Parade in November will have new route

There will be a new route for this year’s Veterans Parade.

The parade will start at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the east end of Officers Row at East Reserve Street. The parade will head west along Evergreen Boulevard, past Officers Row and Providence Academy.

At the Vancouver Community Library, the parade will head south down C Street and turn west on Eighth Street.

The parade route then will turn north on Main Street, then head east on 11th Street. It will end at the west side of Providence Academy.

The Historic Trust is collaborating with the Community Military Appreciation Committee to produce a pre-parade Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Providence Academy ballroom.

After the ceremony, covered seating on the Academy lawn will be provided for parade viewing.

This year, the route “is integrating more with downtown Vancouver,” said Toni Wise, The Historic Trust’s communications manager.

Including Providence Academy on the route also provides a venue for the CMAC ceremony, since the annual Saturday Parade actually falls on Veterans Day this year, Wise said.

In previous years, the parade route has essentially circled the block of the Vancouver Barracks campus, heading south from Officers Row at the O.O. Howard House, then east on Fifth Street and past the replica Fort Vancouver toward Pearson Air Museum.

The event officially is known as the 31st Annual Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver presented by the Lough Legacy. The legacy is an endowment from Frank and Joanne Lough to support the Veterans Parade in perpetuity.

Registration for the parade is now open. Applications are available at https://thehistorictrust.org/patriotic-events/veterans-parade and at The Historic Trust office in the O.O. Howard House, 750 Anderson St.

(The Historic Trust formerly was known as the Fort Vancouver National Trust.)

The deadline for the initial parade lineup is Oct. 9. After that, applications will be accepted, but late registrants will be put at the end of the parade.

The parade annually attracts more than 120 entries, with about 2,500 participants marching or riding in the parade.
