Weather Eye: Approaching rain seems like beginning of fall rainy season

I hope you got any outside chores finished Saturday because today through the end of next week we have rain, showers, wind, maybe thunder, flash floods in the burned areas and snow in the higher Cascades. How is that for an opening?

Total rainfall I would expect by next weekend for the coast and Cascades to receive 4 to 6 inches of rain, and the inland valleys 2 to 4 inches. Sounds like the beginning of the fall rainy season, doesn’t it?

Earlier, I thought it would last only three days or so, but the majority of forecast models keep us wet all week. Some high pressure is forecast to shine some dry weather over next weekend, but this time of the year it could be a fleeting target. We’ll see.

With many areas of ground burned by the numerous wildfires this summer, rainfall will run off quickly causing local flash floods and erosion problems. Expect that in the Gorge along Interstate 84. It may remain closed longer than we want.

Sometimes we have a gradual shift in weather patterns, and other times it feels like a big switch was flipped on. Outside of the terrible tragedy of the wildfires, we had a pleasant summer season that we will remember for a long while.

A storm system moving in from the west-northwest caused higher pressure east of the mountains to usher in those smoky east winds Saturday, about enough to choke you in some places. Thank goodness clean air will be with us for a while now. Whoever did those rain dances recently, we thank you, but you can stop now. We want a little warm, dry weather before the snow flies.
