‘State champ red’ Camas rolls past Davis 52-19

Papermakers open at home with sharp look

CAMAS — Camas football coach Jon Eagle handed out brand new red uniforms to a giddy team this week, a color it has not worn in more than 10 years.

As if the defending 4A state champion Papermakers needed any extra edge.

“It was time,” Eagle said. “Maybe it’s state champ red.”

“The red jerseys are nice,” senior Ryan Rushall said, smiling.

The top ranked team in the state turned on an early offensive outburst befitting of their shiny new threads into a 52-19 throttling of AC Davis of Yakima on Friday night in Doc Harris Stadium — Camas’ first home game of the season.

“First home game, first time playing on this field since we won state so we knew we had to come out and make a statement,” Camas quarterback Kyle Allen said.

By fulfilling a promise Eagle made that included hitting a target goal while fundraising this summer, players had a hand in influencing the return of the red uniforms — they even had a say in the design.

Camas defeated Davis 52-19 in its first home game of the season. The returning state champions scored the first 35 points of the game and saw key contributions across the board. Video

“It’s a good look,” Eagle said. “I’ll never get them out of it now.”

The Papermakers rolled behind the efforts of Kyle Allen, who completed 10 of 16 passes, three of which were touchdowns, for 203 yards. Two of his touchdowns came early in the first quarter.

Allen hit Ja’Michael Shelton for a 32-yard touchdown over the middle to take a 7-0 lead. On Davis’ next set of downs, senior Ryan Rushall dropped back in coverage to anticipate a deep ball and intercepted Pirates quarterback Peter Ramirez in stride, a route Rushall said the team had been practicing that week, which he said set the tone defensively.

“I just read my inside guy, I saw him take off, I knew (the route) right away,” Rushall said. “Before he threw it I knew it was a pick.”

Camas sophomore Ryan Yaacoub scored on a 29-yard connection from Allen on the following possession, and the Papermakers never looked back.

Davis had trouble moving the ball all game and had momentum stymied by interceptions. Until Davis quarterback Peter Ramirez pulled a rabbit out of a hat. With about 30 seconds left in the first half, Ramirez, back-pedaling to elude four Camas rushers, managed an off-balance throw to running back Henry Hernandez for a 24-yard gain. Hernandez scored moments later on a 7-yard run.

But Camas responded immediately.

Senior Trevor Bentley returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to put the Papermakers up 45-7 at halftime — a comfortable lead that was never seriously threatened.

Hernandez finished with 74 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries before being helped off the field with an injury midway through the fourth quarter.

Camas played without senior receiver Drake Owen, who sat out a second game as part of a suspension for a school-related issue. Owen had 12 catches for 203 yards in the opener against Central Catholic (Ore.), but the Papermakers had no issues finding targets.

Shelton scored the first touchdown of the game, and finished with 82 yards receiving on three catches and Rushall had 71 yards on five grabs and a touchdown.
