Sheriff’s deputies on Monday recovered a French bulldog puppy stolen this month during an attempted sale, and it’s back with its owner.

The puppy was taken Oct. 20, after a Cathlamet woman arranged to meet another woman near the fairgrounds to sell the 9-week-old, American Kennel Club-registered puppy for $5,000.

When the parties met, the buyer gave the woman an envelope filled with counterfeit money, according to the sheriff’s office. As the seller inspected the money, the woman snatched the dog and ran to a car, getting away with the puppy.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation led detectives to a suspect as she left a home near Southeast 156th Avenue and Southeast Division Street in Portland.

When confronted, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Jamie Homsley, voluntarily handed over the puppy to detectives.

Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Pete Muller said the sheriffs’ office would recommend a charge of second-degree robbery, and possibly others, to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office. Homsley was not taken into custody, he said.
