Members of Washington’s congressional delegation weighed in Monday on news of the indictments announced in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into ties between Russian government officials and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Democratic Sen. Patty Murray said, “Today’s developments underscore just how critical it is for Robert Mueller to continue to follow the facts wherever they may lead — without threats or intimidation, and with all the resources he needs — so the American people get the full explanation they deserve.”

The phrase “no one is above the law” was used by both Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, and Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington, as Mueller’s investigation continues.

“These charges may only be the beginning of holding individuals accountable,” Cantwell said. “Mueller’s investigation, as well as Congressional investigations, must continue and the justice system must act.”

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Manafort business associate Rick Gates were indicted on felony charges of conspiracy, acting as an unregistered foreign agent and funneling millions of dollars through offshore accounts.

Also revealed Monday was that George Papadopoulos secretly pleaded guilty Oct. 5 for lying to federal agents about his interactions with Russian government officials.
