Weather Eye: NOAA predicts possible cold, snowy winter

Hard to believe we only have one week left in October. After several days of wild weather, this week’s sunshine will be our reward. We had heavy rain showers over the weekend. Monday Vancouver had 4.55 inches in the rain gauge, above the entire months average of three inches. With no rain in sight through Halloween, we may rest this figure in the record books.

Today under sunny skies we will hover around that 70-degree mark for a high about ten degrees above average.

We have a weak weather system skirting by to the north Wednesday for some cloudiness, but any moisture would be sprinkles at best. Then the high pressure really builds Thursday through Monday. If you haven’t made it to the pumpkin patch yet, you will have one final great sunny weekend to explore those attractive, orange fruit.

I have been reading some winter predictions and the forecasters at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center are thinking the residents of the Pacific Northwest are in for another cold and snowy winter.

La Nina potentially appearing for a second year in a row could bring snow. La Nina has a 55 to 65 percent chance of developing before winter. That pattern usually gives plenty of snow in the mountains and ups chances in the lowlands.

You are invited to attend the free 25th annual Winter Weather Forecast Conference at OMSI in Portland Saturday at 10 a.m. to see what local forecasters think.
