Bless their hearts; Eagles give coaches a breather

Bay takes care of business early in 48-0 rout

The Hudson’s Bay Eagles have been the cardiac kids for much of the season.

They twice have kicked game-winning field goals, and last week they held off a Prairie comeback for the victory.

So coach Ray Lions appreciated being able to relax throughout the fourth quarter of Friday’s 48-0 non-league win over Mark Morris at Kiggins Bowl.

“It’s been a little while, so it was definitely nice,” Lions said after his team improved to 5-2 to clinch a second straight winning season. “It was easy on the coaches’ hearts.”

Lions was especially pleased by the effort of his defense, which posted the program’s first shutout of an opponent other than Fort Vancouver in 15 seasons.

“We were able to defend the whole field and played assignment football, and it shows with the zero on the board,” he said.

Quadrese Teague set the tone early for Bay, getting an interception return for a touchdown for the second straight week by hauling in an overthrown fourth-down pass and racing 62 yards down the left sideline for the game’s first score.

“I saw it was coming, and I just went to go get it,” Teague said. “I took off downfield, and I knew I was gone because no one was stopping me. After I did that, it got everyone hyped. We just played at a different level today.”

The Eagles held Mark Morris (1-6) to just 151 yards of total offense–52 of those coming on the Monarchs’ final drive against the second string–forced three turnovers and had four sacks.

“We were just looking to work hard tonight, shut them out, and show our next opponents that we’re going to dominate on defense,” said junior linebacker Toa Kaumatale, who had two tackles for loss and also scored on two short touchdown runs at fullback.

The Eagles spread the wealth all night. Teague had the most touches on offense with six carries, including a 7-yard TD run, and three receptions. Carson Morse added a TD run and TD catch, and Marco Cadiz finished with a game-high 82 rushing yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Cadiz’s 65-yard TD run with 59 seconds left in the opening quarter gave Bay a 14-0 lead. After forcing a three-and-out, Bay made it 21-0 on Kaumatale’s first TD run from a yard out.

The Eagles closed out the first half with a flourish. Morse picked off an overthrown ball deep in Bay territory with 59 seconds left, and quarterback Brian Perez calmly led the two-minute drill. He hit Cadiz for a 32-yard gain, found Morse on a 14-yard completion, and a 15-yarder to Myles Artis to get Bay into the red zone.

After a timeout and an incompletion, Perez double-pumped before throwing a laser to Morse in the end zone with 7 seconds left for a 35-0 halftime lead. Perez finished 13-of-18 passing for 175 yards.

The Eagles face Fort next week at Kiggins Bowl in the annual Peace Pipe Game.
