A sinkhole threatening a Camas fourplex prompted the evacuation of 18 people Monday morning.

Police, fire and road crews were called to Southeast Russell Street and Southeast Seventh Avenue, after people noticed the beginnings of a sinkhole, Camas-Washougal Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Ervin said.

The sinkhole hadn’t opened or caused any damage, he said, but the tenants were evacuated so officials could assess the risk.

The Red Cross responded to aid those affected, which it said included 10 adults, eight children and several pets.
