Erik Powell came up clutch.
The Seton Catholic grad made a 32-yard field goal with 1:40 left to give No. 16 Washington State a 30-27 win over the No. 5 Southern Cal on Friday.
It is the Cougars’ first regular-season win over a top-5 foe since Drew Bledsoe led WSU over Washington in 1992.
Powell also made a season-long 44-yard field goal in the first quarter, as well as a 33-yarder in the third. He now owns 39 career makes, fifth-most in WSU history.
Powell also punted three times, including a 53-yarder. He went 3-for-3 on extra points, and averaged 63.7 yards on seven kickoffs, with four touchbacks.
“I thought it was very important this game. We had to be able to kick the ball,” WSU coach Mike Leach said of Powell. “He was clutch in all three situations. And really the ones he hit, he didn’t leave any doubt. So I thought he really did a good job kicking, and then he did a good job kicking off too.”
