A Battle Ground man faces a charge of vehicular assault after a head-on crash Thursday afternoon in Cowlitz County sent one person to a hospital via Lifeflight.

Washington State Patrol was called to Interstate 5 southbound about 3 miles north of Kelso at about 1:22 p.m. for a two-vehicle crash.

A 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by Daniel Elmer, 60, of Battle Ground was traveling north on the highway when he left the roadway, crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with a 2008 Scion TC hatchback, troopers reported.

A passenger in the Scion, 25-year-old Jozelle Fernandez of Seattle, was taken via Lifeflight to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, where she remains in serious condition.

The driver, David Nguyen, 26, of Kent, was taken to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview, where he was treated and released.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but troopers reported that Elmer faces a charge of vehicular assault.
