VANCOUVER — Aviation lovers and aspiring pilots of all ages can view historic planes up close, climb into the cockpit of vintage aircraft, and “fly” in the flight simulator lab during Open Cockpit Day at Pearson Field on May 27.

The free event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pearson Field Education Center, in the airport at 201A East Reserve St.

Pearson Field pilots will roll out their airplanes and invite guests to sit in the cockpit for a pilot’s-eye view of the controls. Additional activities include the vertical wind table, glider-building station and other STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) activities.

The Young Eagles Program of EAA Chapter 105 will sponsor free airplane rides for young people ages 8 through 17, with written permission from parents or guardians. Rides will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis, weather permitting.

Representatives from Aviation Explorer Post 1905 and the Civil Air Patrol will be on hand to talk to young people about becoming involved in youth aviation programs.

Parking will be in the field northeast of the airport along East Fifth Street between S and U streets. Civil Air Patrol members will be on hand to direct parking.
