Weather Eye: Prepare for weather to keep going up, down like a roller coaster

OK, for this week’s weather scene imagine you are in an amusement park and just got on the roller coaster. As you imagine yourself going up and down, so will our weather. Sound familiar?

Expect skies to be mostly sunny today through Wednesday with highs swinging on the upside to the low 70s by Tuesday and Wednesday. That is the up part that you will enjoy. The going down will bring us showers and cooler weather late Wednesday through Saturday. Highs will cool into the upper 50s. That going up and down gets old. But we don’t complain (not yet anyway) and just enjoy the sunny, warm days. As farmers markets open soon, fresh local produce and berries will be on display. Still waiting for more sunshine for that. But it is coming.

Just to be sure, I’ll buy a large tomato plant for my patio with tiny green tomatoes already set on it. Have no worry, I doubt it will be a green tomato summer, probably a pleasant one. I remember writing a column on May 5, 2011, and had similar thoughts as now after coming off Vancouver’s 6th coldest April and the 7th wettest in 115 years of records.

Meanwhile, the numbers show us that we are running four degrees above normal for the average mean temperature. Rainfall is finally lagging behind average. Things are slowly looking up! That 85 degree high on Thursday was a great start and the warmest day since September 26 with a 88 degree high. The lightning displays were an added bonus.

Enjoy the sunshine and we will chat on Tuesday!
