Hoof it or wing it to Oregon luxury lodge

The Minam River Lodge promises a ‘wilderness oasis’ set in one of the most beautiful locations in Oregon, but you might have to do a little legwork to get there.

The newly renovated lodge is completely remote, surrounded by the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains of northeast Oregon, built along the banks of the wild and scenic Minam River. You can drive to the closest town, Cove, but the only way to get to the Minam River Lodge is via an 8.5-mile trail, or by small plane to the lodge’s private airstrip.

It makes for an unusually rustic retreat, but once you’re there the experience is downright luxurious.

Stay in one of three lodge rooms ($245 per night), each filled with handmade furnishings, or the master suite ($595) that features floor-to-ceiling windows and a freestanding copper bathtub. Cabins come in several varieties, including attached duplex-style ($395), individuals ($495) and grand cabins ($595). Those on a budget can book a wall tent ($195) or a secluded tepee ($95).

One quirk of the Minam River Lodge is its food, which is served family style and is purchased separately from the lodging for $125 per person, per day. The expense will get you three meals a day made with food grown in the lodge’s garden and flown in from local farms.

The Minam River Lodge will open Memorial Day weekend, operating its inaugural season until Oct. 1. Make reservations at minam-lodge.com.
