Weather Eye: Thunderstorms possible today, so be on the lookout

Did you think it was going to happen? Going from cloudy, rainy, cool with temperatures in the upper 50s to sunny and 82 degrees? Yeah, the weatherman was right for once! OK, enough drama, let’s get down to business.

Wednesday began cloudy and foggy across Clark County but way before the clouds cleared one could feel the mugginess in the air. Yep, it was going to get warm when the sun took over. I bet most folks had a case of real spring fever Wednesday as the body tried to adjust from cool to warm. I felt like a nap in the shade, how about you?

Even the coast cleared off, with afternoon temperatures in the low 70s and just a light sea breeze. Picture perfect in the great Northwest. Now, how about a few more days like that? Well, maybe not. Today clouds increase as a cold front approaches and with the warm air aloft we stand a decent chance of thunderstorms here. Some could become severe if conditions allow. Stay tuned for further updates and if thunder is heard, get indoors.

More showers are likely overnight into Friday, decreasing Saturday. We enjoy Sunday through Tuesday with seasonal temperatures and some sunshine. Highs should be 65 to 75 depending on the abundance of sunshine. But a nice start to dry the garden out.

Looking beyond I am afraid to tell you forecast models show more cool and showery conditions later next week. Highs could be below normal once again. Not as bad as previous weeks, but still unsettled. Nature’s remedy for spring fever, maybe.

Across the river in the Rose City, it reached 81 degrees as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the warmest so far, and it’s yet to have a high in the 70s. That is the first time since records began at the airport (1940) that they have recorded a high of 80 or above without recording a high in the 70s beforehand. We already measured a 71-degree high on April 21. Crazy weather!

We’ll chat on Sunday. Watch for thunder and lightning.
