The man who died after kicking in the door to a Vancouver apartment in mid-March was choked to death in a scuffle with the residents as they tried defending themselves, officials said.
The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday that Emmanuel Furrow, 31, of Vancouver died of asphyxia due to neck compression.
Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said the detectives in the case aren’t recommending any charges for the apartment’s residents, but they will forward their findings to the county prosecutors for their consideration.
Furrow kicked in the door to an apartment at Marketplace Apartments, in the 2900 block of General Anderson Avenue, around 12:30 a.m. March 11, according to police, leading to a confrontation with two men inside.
Furrow’s ex-girlfriend was staying at the apartment with her new boyfriend and that man’s father, police said. The police said Furrow attacked the two men, and they tried to fight him off.
The struggle left Furrow dead, but the police said at the time how Furrow died wasn’t immediately clear.
When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Furrow face-down on the floor, unconscious and not breathing.
Officers and paramedics were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The two men who fought with Furrow had cuts and bruises, police said.
Children related to the woman’s boyfriend were inside the apartment at the time, police said. Furrow and the woman had children together, but they were not present.
Motorcycle rider hurt in collision with pickup
A motorcyclist was hospitalized after colliding with another vehicle next to the Hazel Dell WinCo parking lot Thursday afternoon.
Ambulances and sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection at Northeast Highway 99 and Northeast 96th Way around 1:30 p.m.
Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Barnes said the man on the motorcycle was heading south on Highway 99. A man heading north turned left to enter the WinCo lot and apparently did not see the rider, hitting him, Barnes said.
The rider was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, Barnes said.
The sheriff’s office traffic team was investigating the crash, he said, and more information wasn’t immediately available.
